Environmental issues are also playing an increasing role in electro-technology. While Japan is in the forefront with regard to avoidance of environmetally harmful marterials (particulary heavy metals) in production, efforts are being made in this direction at European and global level. Use of cables containing lead is alread prohibited in Denmark. In addition, the European Union has already responded to the issue. The EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT and the EUROPEAN COUNCIL adopted the 'Directive 2002/95/EG on the restricition of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment', to become national law in the year 2004.
The directive is also known as the RoHS guideline (Restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and elctronic equipment).

The objective of the directive is to minimize risks to people and environment by reducing the pollutants generated in the production, use and disposal of electrical and electronic products. From July, the first 2006, the use of

- lead and other metals (Hg, Cd, Cr(VI))
- flame retardants PBB (polybrominated biphenyls) and PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ethers)

will be prohibited in electrical and electronic products such as house hold applicances, IT & telecommunication equipment and consumer electronic devices.

All KLOTZ cables are already manufactured in compliance with the RoHS directive (zero content of lead and other hazardous substances).
